When someone visits Paris and decides to go to castle, the immediate choice is Chateaux de Versailles no questions asked!
I don’t blame them, that place is absolutely spectacular and being a fan of the history and life of France’s royalty (especially Marie Antoinette), it just seems like an obvious choice.
But there’s much more than only Versailles, there are tons of castles spread all over the French territory and as a matter of fact three of them are close enough to go on a one-day trip from the city of lights.
These Castles near Paris are: Fontainebleau, Chantilly and Vaux-le-Vicomte.
Located about 60km south-east of Paris, it was the residence of French Monarchs throughout many years. My favorite among the three, due to its beautiful interiors and architecture. The gardens are simple but charming.
Located about 50km north of Paris, was a mansion built by the Montmorency family and destroyed during the French Revolution to be later entirely rebuilt to what it looks like today.
The castle is more modest than that of Fontainebleau but still very charming; the gardens created by André Le Nôtre on the other hand, are simply amazing!
Located about 55km south-east of Paris, it was created by Nicolas Fouquet (Superintendent of Finances to King Louis XIV) with the help of the famous trio: Le Veau, Le Nôtre and Le Brun.
This castle inspired the construction of Versailles and holds an extraordinary history, as a matter of fact Fouquet ended up in prison just because of it.
I hope these photos and small introduction, inspire you to step off the beaten path and visit these beautiful places so rich of history!
